2021 0802 LOCAL DEMOCRATS - Reminder to VOTE! and Aug eNews info

posted Aug 5, 2021, 10:02 PM by Douglas County Democrats
It's a busy and smoky summer!  Lots of us are trying to catch up on visits with family and friends, and COVID is surging again.  We've put our masks back on again to protect... everyone.

Just sharing a quick reprise of the past month:
  • Nearly 100 people turned out in 100+ degree heat for our Summer Picnic on 7/17.  We had great music by The Saddle Rockers, guest speakers Congresswoman Kim Schrier, and multiple candidates as theyare running in 3- or more-way races.  All need our votes by TOMORROW!  Ballot dropboxes close at 8pm.  We were also joined by candidates who will be on the November General Election ballots. We enjoyed one another's company, getting acquainted with the candidates, and we had a chance to be Democrats in public again.
  • PCOs for both counties voted to "recommend" the above candidates, and the HQ staff sent out slate-postcards to nearly 10,000 households, which represented about 15,000 Democratic voters (in just the 3 school district jurisdictions).  GOTV phone banks are being worked now by dedicated volunteers to do their best to make sure that each of those voters returns their ballots!  If you didn't receive a postcard, we've attached a copy to this newsletter.
  • Many local Democrats have given testimony to the WA State Redistricting Commission, sharing thoughts about where the congressional and legislative district boundaries should be redrawn.  You can still weigh in on this effort by going to the website and submitting your thoughts and suggestions.  You can even "Draw Your WA" map using a clever tool they make available.  Although this is supposed to be a relatively non-partisan activity, our observation is that the comments being made by half of the testifiers is extremely right-biased and, frankly, full of falsehoods.  Please weigh in.  The Commission will consider all input before drawing the final maps.
  • Our Democratic "Coffee Breaks" continue on Tuesdays from 11-12+.  The best attended and most fun take place on the 2nd and 4th Tues, when we gather at Pybus on the dining decks of South or Ice Restaurants.  Please join us, as you are able.  We're considering dropping some of the Zoom Coffee Break gatherings - and this month will only do a zoom on the 3rd Tues at 11.  Use this link to join:  https://us02web.zoom.us/j/82441867847?pwd=QUhLV2J5bVJiUmxoalVuNEpWdlNHQT09
  • The HQ Team staffs the office on MWF from 10-2, but you can often find us there at other times.  We are signing up volunteers to work on letter and postcard writing, as well as help candidates.  We also have a nice array of yard signs with social justice messages on them.  Stop by or fill in the link below.
  • Every day, we are gathering in teams with Dems and other organizations to build a more effective community presence and impact.  We'd love your help.
Here's the reminder about Wednesday night's general meeting, which occurs on the first Wednesday of each month.  We hope you'll be able to attend.  Please RSVP and we'll send you the Zoom link and meeting documents.
