2020 Dec 1 eNews

posted Dec 8, 2020, 6:19 PM by Douglas County Democrats

Dear NCW Democrats and Friends,

Welcome to December 2020.  We’ve had a little time to examine election results and anecdotes, and there is great reason to celebrate!

·   We voted in record numbers in North Central Washington, with dramatic increases in turnout by 18-35 year olds.  Voter turnout in Chelan and Douglas counties was 86.2% and 83.9%, respectively, and 84% statewide.  Nearly 60% of voters in WA support Biden/Harris.

·   Without fanfare, our counties certified their elections on Nov 24, as will our state on Dec 3.

·   On Dec 14, Washington State’s Democratic Party electors will cast their 16 votes for the Biden/Harris ticket, as will a majority of the other states’ members of the Electoral College.

·   On January 20, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will be sworn into office as president and vice-president of the United States.

Safe.  Secure.  Robust.  We have a brighter future ahead.  Still, the work on behalf of our democracy must continue.  If we grow complacent, satisfied – or disillusioned, history reflects a cautionary tale.  On the other hand, vigilance and advocacy will move us toward better tomorrows.  Together, we will stay the course to Build Back Better!

Here are some notes for the coming weeks:

NCW Dem General Meeting (first Wed ea mo):  Wednesday, Dec 2, 7 - 8:30p on Zoom.  On the agenda: Party reorganization plans and dates, preliminary results of recent Democratic leadership and PCO surveys, upcoming Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion plans, election support for GA, and regular business.  All Democrats are welcome.  RSVP for a meeting link HERE (https://forms.gle/Ru3fiwka86etap54A).

Democratic “Coffee Break” Tuesday Dec 8, 11a – noon via Zoom (and every Tue); RSVP for link HERE (https://forms.gle/9zjFsV4v64c6CQY97).  These are informal conversations with other Democrats to share information about local issues and more.  All are welcome.  There’s still time to join today!

Biennial Democratic Party Reorganization Meetings:  This is an exciting time when we gather to elect new party leadership!  While this year will look much different from many prior reorganizations due to our need to utilize virtual tools, much of the core work and process will be the same.  At our reorganization meetings, newly elected PCOs elect new leadership, like chairs, vice-chairs, state committee members, secretaries and treasurers.  These local Party leaders dedicate a considerable amount of time and make a significant commitment to sustaining and building our local Democratic Party.

Please mark the following dates and times on your calendars.  Utilize the accompanying links if you would like to run for a leadership position to serve our community.  Any Democrat who resides within the jurisdiction may run for office.  All nominations must be submitted by the deadline listed below.  From these nominations, ballots will be prepared and distributed to voting members prior to the election.  No nominations will be permitted from the floor.  Only elected PCOs may nominate.  Only elected PCOs are permitted to vote.

Reorganization meetings via Zoom will be held for the following organizations:

·   Douglas County Democrats: Saturday, Dec 12, 10:00a, https://forms.gle/9GECujvKBYwEXVGR7 (nominations must be submitted by 11:59p on Tue, Dec 8)

·   Democrats of Chelan County: Saturday, Dec 12, 1:00p, https://forms.gle/G2Ycb2a8P3XZF7Hm7 (nominations must be submitted by 11:59p on Tue, Dec 8)

·   Democrats of the 12th Legislative District: Saturday, January 9, 1:00p, https://forms.gle/6iRYqJm9WDNxAwB77 (nominations must be submitted by 11:59p on Tue, Jan 5)

·   WA State Democratic Party: Saturday, January 30, 2021 (will be elected by new state committee members, details to follow)

PCOs and Party Leaders should watch for an email later this week dedicated solely to reorganization rules and procedures.  Also watch for a YouTube link for non-voting attendees.  The biennial reorganization meetings on Saturday Dec 12 will launch a new cycle of leadership.  Let us know if you’re interested in becoming more involved!

GA and the Senate:

We are told that the best way to help in Georgia, between now and the Jan 6 2021 Senatorial Runoff Election, is to donate to or work with the following organizations, as there is much voter registration work and voter turnout to be done.  This is currently the HIGHEST priority for out-of-state folks.  Donate, phone bank, or write postcards NOW.

Fair Fight: https://fairfight.com

New Georgia Project: https://newgeorgiaproject.org

Black Voters Matter: https://blackvotersmatterfund.org

Next, or if those opportunities don’t appeal, go right to he campaigns but expect to be phone banking:

HOW CAN WE HELP LOCALLY?  With regard to POSTCARDS, to do our part, we are working with FairFight (Stacey Abrams) and other allies in GA, and have received the names and addresses of 3000+ GA voters.  The first 1000 voters will receive our personal messages by 12/7.  Volunteers are writing those postcards now.

A second group of 2000 voters must be contacted by 12/12 in order to provide time for them to request absentee ballots.  We need more postcard writers – 20-30 would be nice!  You supply the postcards and stamps (we have some postcards available for purchase – see picture/first come-first served/ ~$1.50 per 10 cards – or you have time to order online).  Please sign up to write 10, 25, 50 or more, to encourage every Democrat in GA to vote – let them know how much their vote means to the entire country!  Isn’t it worth a little bit of your time to help Flip the Senate BLUE?  Fill out this form (https://forms.gle/PygFhU6oGyBWzVJz5) and we’ll send you instructions, a script, and a list of names of GA voters.  Let us know if you need postcards.

NEXT STEPS

SIGNS:  For those still wanting to drop off unwanted yard signs, please leave signs and wires in the box outside the office door.  We are storing reusable signs and wires off-site and repurposing others for future needs.  Signs are made of a material that is not currently recyclable.  Thank you, to our amazing group of “sign support” folks – your help was invaluable.

#GivingTuesday:  Please consider supporting the ongoing work of our local Democratic Party to cultivate and recruit local candidates, build effective neighborhood teams, register and inform voters, participate in the statewide Democrat Party, and keep our NCWDem Headquarters Office OPEN!  Yes, the office is temporarily closed to the public, but we’re still doing work, responding to calls and emails, planning for the months ahead.  Your recurrent or one-time contribution (preferably split between our two county organizations) will allow us to plan for 2021 and beyond.
